The Adventurer's Son

My book about raising our son, then losing and finding him, is done. William Morrow, an "imprint" of Harper Collins, is releasing it Feb 18, 2020 a few days before Cody Roman would have turned 33.

It is an important (to me) book that I needed to write and took great care in writing.

If you look at this blog, you might consider reading this book. It's a memoir along one thin line leading to my son.

If you can't wait until then, you can take your chances with a free early version, a so-called "Advanced Reader's Edition" given away by lottery at Good Reads.

They already gave 100 away, and they will be giving 100 more. If you win one and read it, then let me know what you think here, in the comments.

  1. Hi Roman,
Park Ranger Josh Spice recommend to me to get in contact with you when I asked him a question about hiking/packrafting restrictions in a particular region on the north slope. Is there a way to reach you via email? If so you can reach me at
    Thanks, Chris

  2. I'm really glad that you wrote this. It's an important story, legacy and catharsis.
    Well done.

  3. I received an advance reader copy and I was enthralled. I would have loved to have grown up in a family like yours. My own family never took a single vacation. (I am trying to make up for it now). You and Peggy sound like my dream parents. You raised your children on love, fun, and adventure. Your book was well written. I couldn't stop reading it until it was over. I am so sorry for your loss but am glad at the end there was closure.

    1. Thanks for posting this here. No vacations! You do have a lot to make up for....

I'm glad the book held your interest. It's important to me that it does.

  4. Mr. Dial,

I’ve always been fascinated by your adventures after having been turned on to you by Andrew a few years ago.

I just finished the book, and it was a beautiful memoir indeed... I found myself emotionally invested in your journey.

You’re a great dad, and you gave Roman the kind of life everyone dreams of, but few experience.

    Take care.
