More on The Adventurer's Son

Steve Rinella hosted me as a guest on a recent "Meateater Podcast." He's a pretty intense guy, and having read his book American Buffalo I really looked forward to meeting him. Here's the link

My publisher has released two chapters from Part I of The Adventurer's Son as they gear up to release the book in a few weeks. Not much need be said about these chapters; if I wrote them well, then they should speak for themselves, right?

  1. Hi Roman - I just finished reading the book. I loved it, very well written. It was an exciting, compelling story that pulled the reader along and I thought it showed the depth of your love for Cody Roman and the emotional (and other) struggles you faced after he went missing. The story of the TV show was incredibly frustrating to read but I'm sure it can't compare to what it was to go through.

I thought a lot about my dad and our relationship while reading it - I was born just two weeks after Cody Roman and like you, my father is a scientist and a serious athlete. While he prefers ball sports to wilderness travel, and the hiking and backpacking trips we've done together here in Washington state pale in comparison to your family's adventures, I was still struck by it and had to pause numerous times to sit and think about our relationship - the things he taught me, things he wanted to teach me but I didn't want to learn, the special moments we've shared and the regrets that each of us might have.

Thanks for writing the book. I can't imagine it was always easy but it was for sure worth it.

    1. Alex,

It is so generous of you to take the time and write such a thoughtful response to The Adventurer's Son. It's important to me that the book has some meaning for those who read it.

I'm really glad that it encouraged you to reflect on your dad, yourself, and your relationship with him. He sounds like a neat guy and a good father.

Thank you for commenting. I appreciate it.

  2. Hi Roman,

I learned about your book and story on The Meateater podcast. I just finished the book and wanted to find a way to get a message to you. I really enjoyed reading about your life and your time with Roman. It helped me to focus on what's important for me and my boys. My oldest had a medical scare a couple months ago (he's doing well now) and your book helped me to sort out some of the thoughts and emotions I've been dealing with.

Thank you for sharing your family's story.

    -Jason

    1. Jason,

Thank you for taking the time to comment on The Adventurer's Son here. People sometimes ask for whom I wrote the book. After me, my family and my friends, I say it's for other fathers and their sons, too. As an author it's important to read comments like yours.
